Doorbell battery claims, and what cold weather does to them

The claims here are "up to 8 months" on the Tapo D225 and "up to two years" on the Blink Video Doorbell. Both are maker claims with "up to" in front. A busy door, live viewing and cold all pull them down. Ring's support page says battery life drops at around freezing, and its doorbells stop charging below freezing.
What Ring says about temperature
- Ring devices work best at about 75 F and operate between -4 F and 122 F.
- When the temperature drops to around freezing, the battery will not last as long. It returns to normal once it warms up and is recharged.
- The device is designed to stop charging below freezing. You may need to bring it inside to charge by USB.
- Long exposure to hot weather hurts overall battery lifetime. Ring suggests a shaded spot.

Wiring a battery doorbell
Ring's hardwiring page says existing wiring gives the battery a trickle charge. Arlo's FAQ says its doorbell always runs on the battery, and wiring keeps it topped up. Blink still needs its AA cells when wired. Its battery guide recommends Energizer lithium 1.5 V cells and says they hold up in extreme temperatures. Keep in mind that a trickle charge cannot help a battery that refuses to charge below freezing.
If you live where winters are hard
A wired-only doorbell has no battery to sag. Both here, the Ring Video Doorbell Wired and the Google Nest Doorbell (Wired, 3rd Gen), need the right transformer. The Ring listings give -4 F as the low end of the operating range, and Blink's gives -5 F.
